"Quality Counts"

In this years survey Mississippi ranked last in school achievement.  The achievement index is based on 15 individual indicators relating to reading and math performance, high school graduation rates, and the results of Advanced Placement tests.  Based on school achievement alone, Mississippi ranked last in school achievement.

This year, for the first time, Quality Counts included a new measure called the Chance-for-Success Index.  This index attempts to predict the success in life that current students will enjoy after leaving school.  It combines information from 13 indicators that span a person's life from cradle to career such as Family Income; Parent Education; Parental Employment; school achievement measures; and, Steady Employment.  In this index Mississippi was ranked 45th (tied with Tennessee and Alabama).

The Mississippi Department of Education has issued a statement in response to these findings.  To read the reply click here.
